There are several other 3rd party firmware projects for the WRT54G / WRT54GL routers, but I am choosing DD-WRT for several reasons: 1) It is a mature project. 2) It is a Linux based free and open source project wireless router / gateway that supports client bridge mode as a method of geographically extending a wireless LAN. with a wrt54gl (23sp2) as AP and a fon* (till 0803 => client bridge) I had very slow speed (1.1 ms/s) The only way for me was to I set fon* as wds station and achieved 2.2 mb/s. Then I never was able to use encryption other than WEP. In bridge mode, the LAN IP address of your client router is actually irrelevant. You could set it to 0.0.0.0 and the bridge will work. However, if you do this—or set it to an IP outside the primary router's subnet—you will lose access to the client router's administration interface.
